The Regular App Expands with Acquisition of Capital Trivia and Joint Venture Agreement with Meet Near Me
The Washington, D.C.-based event startup and app behind District Karaoke, DC Bocce, and other local social leagues and experiences raises funding and secures industry partnerships to expand technology and experience offerings.
Washington, D.C. — The Regular, a growing community-focused event app and black-owned startup, is pleased to announce its latest milestones, further solidifying its position as a national leader in the event, hospitality, and rapidly growing “Eatertainment” space.
As part of its expansion, The Regular has acquired Capital Trivia, a locally-based company that hosts trivia and music bingo nights at over 20 venues across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area.
“Capital Trivia provides the best in trivia and music bingo in the region, so being able to create a deeper level of community with our guests and venues with a partner like The Regular was an easy decision,” said Nicholas John, founder of Capital Trivia. “We look forward to taking advantage of The Regular’s app and footprint across the District to attract more locations and drive traffic to our partner-venues.” With this acquisition the company hopes to drive further growth through cross-selling of trivia nights to venues currently hosting karaoke or vice versa.
In addition, the company has entered into a joint venture with Meet Near Me, a stealth Silicon Valley startup that is an aspiring competitor to Eventbrite. This partnership will bolster The Regular's mission to seamlessly connect people with recurring community events like karaoke nights, trivia, and social leagues. Meet Near Me will provide software engineering expertise to enhance The Regular’s app, improving product experience and driving new users. Together, the companies hope to create the go-to place for Eatertainment events - karaoke nights, trivia nights, etc. The agreement also comes with investments to fund The Regular’s marketing efforts in key cities where the company now has a presence including Los Angeles, Chicago, Baltimore, and Northern Virginia.
“We share The Regular team’s passion for facilitating the magic of in-person connection,” said Brian Feister, a Salesforce Engineering Lead and Founder & CEO of Meet Near Me. “We’re excited to come out of stealth and unveil our own unique twist on event technology that nurtures real in-person communities in the face of ever-expanding virtualization of human connection. With The Regular we get thousands of karaoke lovers, trivia aficionados, and more as users as soon as we hit launch day.”
“With the acquisition of Capital Trivia, we’re moving closer to being a one-stop shop for karaoke, trivia, and other fun recurring events that build real community in the DC region and across the country,” said Brandolon Branett, local author and former Columbia Heights ANC who is also the Founder & CEO of The Regular. “Brian and I worked together on an incredible team at Salesforce building the company's Philanthropy Cloud product. I know Meet Near Me will bring the tech expertise we need to list those events and improve engagement with these experiences for everyone. Together, we’re bringing people together in a way that’s more important now than ever in an age when so many people are lonely.”
Celebrating with The Regular Week
To celebrate these milestones and continued growth, The Regular will host its first annual “The Regular Week” this Fall from September 29th through October 5th at locations around the DMV. The Regular Week is a celebration inspired by Restaurant Week but focuses on discounts and engagement with fun community events like karaoke, trivia, and bingo, helping thousands come together and make new friends. There will be specials at dozens of venues and highlight events like a Disney-themed karaoke night and the inaugural National Competitive Karaoke Tournament on October 5th at Penn Social in Chinatown DC. Teams from across the country will fly in to compete for the title of National Karaoke Champions and a documentary crew from Los Angeles will be on hand to complete filming for a documentary on the competitive karaoke community.
