The Regular Acquires Cap City Trivia and Major League Bocce
The acquisitions will further expanding the local company’s national footprint in community events
Washington, D.C. – The Regular, a Washington D.C.-based platform for recurring community events, today announced it has acquired CapCity Trivia and Major League Bocce. These twin acquisitions significantly expand The Regular’s event footprint and solidify its role as a premier platform for recurring social events in the mid-atlantic region and beyond.
In just three years since its founding, The Regular has seen a 733% increase in revenue by focusing on the power of community and recurring local events. With the additions of Cap City Trivia and Major League Bocce, The Regular is now providing events to 69 venues across the country including 55 right here in DC, MD, VA. From Wednesday competitive karaoke with District Karaoke at Sauf Haus in Dupont, to Sunday Bocce & Brunch for Major League Bocce at Pinstripes in Georgetown, or Tuesday Trivia at Tryst in Adams Morgan, you can now find events hosted by The Regular companies and staff on every night of the week in the DC region.
“That’s the real point. It’s about more than revenue – it’s about community,” said Brandolon Barnett, local author, tech entrepreneur, and former Columbia Heights ANC who is also Founder and CEO of The Regular. “We started The Regular in large part because we saw and personally felt the loneliness during and coming out of COVID. We saw the people running events and the venues hosting them were struggling. And it struck us how much more we’ve invested in creating digital spaces than real world spaces. It’s hard to do. But these acquisitions allow us to connect even more people through weekly experiences. In the process we’re proud that it helps 3rd spaces in our city build community”.
The acquisitions align with The Regular’s pivot in 2024 into a Venture Studio investor for community-led event companies. In this model, The Regular invests in and acquires small community brands - small companies that are paid to host trivia nights, karaoke, or adult social sports leagues – and works to develop in-house event management tech, operations, and services to help them scale. By unifying fragmented local event operators and equipping them with better tools to solve shared problems, The Regular aims to streamline operations and allow hosts to focus on creating the best in person experiences rather than payroll or constant recruitment of hosts and new venues. This approach has helped previous acquisitions see triple digit increases in attendance since becoming a part of The Regular. This also creates new opportunities for staff with CapCity Trivia and Major League Bocce staff now getting access to opportunities to throw their own special events, host karaoke nights, and more.
The Regular is next focused on building out its technology and operations processes. On the technology front the company will focus on combining trivia night apps, karaoke song selection, social league score keeping, all into one experience through The Regular App. That app will also become a place to explore recurring events in your area. The company is also planning to hold more of what it calls signature events, to help bring all of these communities together for fun experiences. Think Disney Karaoke or Zombie Halloween Trivia parties. The company is also planning expansion in other cities it now has a presence in, including Chicago, Richmond, and Los Angeles. According to Brandolon, “we want to see if we can create the same ecosystem of support for the people creating communities and hosting these events as silicon valley has for influencers creating digital spaces. We need people and community now more than ever. That’s where we’re looking to invest”.
CapCity Trivia, founded in the D.C. area, hosts popular live trivia nights at dozens of bars and restaurants across Washington, Maryland, and Virginia. Known for its “by the players, for the players” approach, CapCity Trivia has built a loyal following of trivia enthusiasts with its no-phone, no-app format.
Major League Bocce, launched in D.C. in 2004, has expanded to 11 cities including Dallas, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and DC, and registers over 12,000 players each year, making it the nation’s largest organized bocce league majorleaguebocce.com. Major League Bocce pioneered the social bocce trend by turning weeknight league play into a fun, casual way to connect with friends (often with a drink in hand). Bringing these two proven community-driven brands into The Regular family extends the company’s reach and diversification in the live events space.
